What's Next? Where do we go from here?
This project had a lot of momentum and has generated lots of interest.
We also became aware of the overwhelming number of older computers
in Juneau, for which there is no apparent means of disposal or finding new homes.
Here's some of the places where we might go from here with the energy from this project:
- Build a supercomputer using cast-off PCs - an advanced science club project.
Others have built supercomputers (Beowulf)
by networking older PC's together, using Linux, approaching credible supercomputer speeds. Amazing! And there's been
dabbling with this concept in schools already:
- Larger, more formal club or class, perhaps through 4H or in association with a school.
- Refurbish computers and find needy homes for them. In larger
communities "down south" institutionalized methods of dealing with surplus
computers are springing up, both in nonprofit (e.g. Free Geek)
and for-profit (see the National Safety Council's list
of computer recyclers - none are listed for Alaska) forms. But in our smaller
Alaskan community, there are no such organizations. Yet. Here's some places we
might explore:
- Third world countries (perhaps our sister city, Vladivostok).
Shipping is the kicker here, but there are possibilities.
- Families with needs in Juneau or outlying bush communities.
