Day One

  • Choose computer case from pile (label with name!)
  • "Parts of Computer" Lecture, using open case, motherboard
    • Location of main components
    • Electrocution Hazards (Always Check Unplugged!!)
    • Static Electricity caution, static wristband and static pad demo
  • Setup documentation notebooks and tab dividers
  • Tutorial on computers: guided tour thru computer (each student on separate browser)
  • Using chosen case, open case and identify components
  • Inventory Old Components and Collect Drivers
    • Remove Old Hardware (Disk Drives etc.)
    • List (photograph helps) each items type and number
    • Web search for each item
      • Print Specifications - put in notebook binder
      • Locate and download Driver from Manufacturer
  • Spray Paint Cases (If Desired)
    • Field trip to hardware store to pick out color
    • Spray Paint by exhaust fan hood system.

End of day 1: an impromptu "LAN Party" with multiplayer Starcraft. Boys had to reassemble computer components and hookup the LAN to make this work again. (Four networked computers in this room).
