Muscle Cars and Oil

The allure of 60s muscle cars, and the marketing hype that Detroit used to accelerate that allure, still have much to do with our attitudes about oil consumption, and very much to do with our current foreign policy. And, the allure of fast, linear-accelerating road machines is back (in case you haven't noticed). Witness the popularity of the "Fast and Furious" films with the younger crowd and Chrysler's hype about the reborn Hemi successfully targeting the aging baby boomers.

But what's this all about? It really is no huge personal accomplishment to gen up a hot car to drive down the road... just about anyone with half a brain can figure out how to earn enough money to do that (however if you build it yourself you command my respect). But still, I gotta admit, regardless of origins, I DO feel a certain thrill when I light up that 440 Magnum and listen to the rumble of the big V-8.

Please remember that gas guzzling has its political, and deeply personal cost. Let us not forget the 550 soldiers who have died in Iraq (as of March 1, 2004), 381 of those in hostile fire. Have a moment to reflect on the growing list of names, their faces and life stories, and how these deaths weave through the fabric of American life.

And finally, if you don't have a clue about the connections between muscle cars, dying soldiers in Iraq, and skyrocketing federal deficits (which you WILL pay for dearly), its time to start reading.....and thinking....

Find your own path and think for yourself....but DO it!!!!!
