Blending Aviation and Computer Technologies in an Elementary Setting

Objectives
- Develop two specific skills in low pressure setting:
- Reading - Longer works, more advanced levels.
- Writing
- Develop a self-motivated interest in writing
- Keyboarding skills (to at least minimumJuneau School District CORE standards)
- As future building block
- To help overcome resistance to penmanship and revision.
- Develop basic writing composition skills
- Experiment with creative writing activities
- Use a Project-Based Curriculum, building on the students own interest in Aviation, integrating other subjects
where possible. In some cases a plan of studies separate from the main project will be followed.
- Math: Continue with "Everyday Math 5th Grade" curriculum topics. Use examples from main project as much as possible.
We wholeheartedly support
the first principle that guided the development of Everyday Mathematics:
"Students acquire knowledge and skills, and develop an understanding of
mathematics from their own experience.
Mathematics is more meaningful when it is rooted in real life contexts and
situations, and when children are given the opportunity to become actively
involved in learning.
- Science: The aviation curriculum provides in depth coverage of meteorology, physics, and other sciences
- Provide social studies: Basic Alaska History and American History
- Art: Art activities at DZ (also good intro to DZ) and other fora.
- Music: Continue violin (Student is 2nd year Suzuki) either in current setting or alternative.
- PE: League soccer (2 days per week). Other activities as appropriate (tennis, skiing etc.)
- Other Objectives
- Academics during school day. Evenings free for family time.
- Support Hands-On learning style - student is a kinesthetic learner.
- Develop better reference skills: library, internet, dictionary etc.
- Develop life skills
Setting
- TV-Free Household.
- Parenting in Two Households.

- Template and ideas for other homeschooling families
Implementation
- DAILY EDUCATION ACTIVITIES
- Math Activity (topics from "Everyday Math", Aviation Technology, and current interest)
- Reading (1 hour)
- Correspondence (Draft Email or letter to someone)
- Flight school activity (varies - strongly multidisciplinary, much math and science)
- FREQUENT ACTIVITIES
- Keyboarding Lesson (Mavis Beacon) - 3 days a week
- Reference Material Use (Reference books, library, museum, Internet Search)
- Social Studies - Alaska History, American History
- Life Skills (Cooking basics, hygiene and food safety, personal care, basic sewing, basic first-aid, health and leisure, personal finance (savings accounts and checkbooks), filling out job applications and interviewing basics, behavioral science and animal husbandry (Pet care and training).

Assessment
Homeschooling allows relaxed and thorough assessment through daily interaction
and discussion, which is then used to further guide the student's activites.
Specific tests are available for aviation technology and keyboarding skills.
Assessments are available at the end of each unit of Everyday Math.
Standardized assessment testing will be conducted in accordance with Juneau School District Policy.
