Aviation: Air Traffic control review - radar processes, "o'clock" relative position reporting from ATC in complicated circumstances. Also reviewed Jeppesen maneuvers CD-ROM.

Reading: Hardy Boys; Chapter on history of Yamamoto mission from Guadalcanal to Bouganville. Turns out our flight yesterday just happened to follow the exact course of this historical event, and our abrupt flight termination was at the exact spot! Then repeated yesterdays flight in WWII era aircraft with more documentation about the mission, using a mission simulator for CFS2 downloaded from the internet.

    Music: violin practice

Math: Prime factorization and factor trees - review with worksheet after Joe didn't immediately identify the label a couple days ago. He remembered the concept very well though, and had it down. Pre-algebra worksheet - variables and equation transition. Multiplication with decimals (evening).

    Music: violin practice and lesson.

PE: outdoor soccer with homeschool group on astroturf at Adair-Kennedy field.

Ethics: Was Yamamoto assassinated"? Good discussion, after Joe found a reference to a concern about this in his reading yesterday. Is it somehow less moral or ethical to target a specific individual in a wartime act, or why was there concern about this? No resolution of course and the subject was disturbing but good to talk about.

Aviation: Airport markings and regulations, ATIS.

Aviation: VOR navigation practice. Tuned in Nodine MN VOR and flew to and away from several times. Also landed nearby to observe VOR indicated a little more slowly, while at taxiing speed.

Music: violin - learned road to Liston Varna, and part of Ashokan Farewell. We were curious about the name "Ashokan" (I had always thought it "A Shogun's Farewell), so had Joe research it on the internet, where he found Ashokan Farewell FAQ about the town in eastern New York, now under a reservoir. To make the place more real we hopped into our networked flight simulators, plotted a course to the reservoir from nearby Kingston NY airfield, took off and had a spin or two around the lake. Looks like it is nestled at the edge of the foothills that break out into the Hudson River valley.

Aviation: VOR navigation. Practiced fixing position with two lines of position from VOR's. Flew from LaCrosse, WI to the Wisconsin Dells, landing on Interstate 90. While on the ground (helps to be stopped when learning) Joe tuned in, identified from Morse Code, and got bearings to Lone Rock and Baraboo VORTAC sites. He then plotted them on an aeronautical chart to fix his position.

Lunch recess at Capitol Playground with JCCS.

Joe's laid up with his leg injury from last night's trip to the emergency room after slipping while playing laser tag and hitting a post. 14 or so stitches in a deep leg gash and leg immobilized for 2 weeks. Leg elevated and in bed for the day, rather painful.

Rather laid up with injuries (note leg in brace), but that won't stop this guy from flying! Rather low-key day academically because of pain, medication, and comfort levels. Finished reading Hardy Boys #10 "What happened at midnight".

Not much school happening yet, other than medical education! Spent afternoon and early evening at the doctors for more assessment and IV antibiotics. Read some Hardy Boys, but thats about it.

  • Wednesday May 22, 2002

Finally getting back on track. Reading: Finished Hardy Boys#22: the Flickering Torch Mystery.

    Music: Violin practice

History/Ethics/Language: Japanese internment during WWII. Watched film "Midway", a short segment of which dealt with this topic. Discussion of codebreaking lead us into our page on Japanese Language Systems

Math: area of circles. Back to Pi with several exercises. Cut out circle of squares (graph paper) and calculated area from pi*r^2 and by counting the cutout squares. Practiced computing several other areas of found circular objects.
